What is EMDR?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a powerful therapy designed to help people recover from trauma. It’s been extensively researched and is known to be highly effective for those dealing with distressing memories or emotional pain related to trauma. EMDR involves structured steps that bring together different types of therapies, but its core purpose is simple: to help you process and heal from the painful experiences that are keeping you stuck.
How Does EMDR Work?
EMDR uses a technique called bilateral stimulation, which means activating both sides of the brain at the same time. This is often done by having you follow a therapist's finger as it moves from side to side in front of your eyes. This back-and-forth movement mimics what happens during REM sleep, which is when your brain naturally processes daily experiences. For people with trauma, certain painful memories get "stuck" and aren’t processed properly. EMDR helps to unlock and reprocess these memories so you can move forward.
For those living with trauma, EMDR allows the brain to heal in a way that stops you from being overwhelmed by past events. It can help uncover and work through deeply rooted beliefs that may have formed during traumatic experiences, including those from childhood.
What Can EMDR Help With?
While EMDR is most well-known for treating PTSD, it’s also effective for a variety of other issues, including:
- Panic Attacks
- Grief and Loss
- Dissociation
- Flashbacks or Disturbing Memories
- Phobias
- Chronic Pain
- Performance Anxiety
- Addictions
- Sexual or Physical Abuse
- Low Self-Esteem or Body Image Issues
Is EMDR Right for You?
You might feel like your emotional reactions are bigger than the current situation warrants, or that you’re triggered by certain events or people. You may also carry negative beliefs about yourself, even though you logically know they aren’t true. EMDR can help untangle these deeply held emotional reactions and bring relief.
